The honest comparison from a licensed Florida pool contractor. Cost, lifespan, feel underfoot, and how each finish handles well water, salt systems, and Gulf air.

All three are cement-based and applied by hand over your existing shell. The difference is what is mixed into the cement, and that decides how long it lasts here.
Cost: lowest. Life in Florida: 7 to 12 years. Feel: smoothest. Weakness: stains from iron and copper, mottles, etches under poor chemistry. Best for: city water, a careful owner, or a pool you plan to sell within a few years.
Cost: 25 to 50 percent above plaster. Life: 12 to 18 years. Feel: smooth with a little texture. Weakness: still cement-based, still needs balanced water. Best for: most homeowners on well water who want color and durability without the pebble feel.
Cost: roughly double plaster. Life: 15 to 20 or more years. Feel: textured; polished mini-pebble is gentler. Weakness: price, and rough on feet if you pick a coarse grade. Best for: salt-water canals, heavy well water, snowbird pools that sit unattended, and anyone who wants to do this once.
We test your fill water, look at how you use the pool, and recommend one finish, not the most expensive one. Written price the same visit. Call 941-302-8081. Licensed CPC1456897.
Three local conditions shorten the life of any finish, and they decide which one we recommend.
Most of North Port, Englewood, South Venice, inland Port Charlotte, and Lehigh Acres fill pools from wells with iron, manganese, and high hardness. These minerals bond to plaster and turn it brown or gray. Quartz hides it better; pebble hides it best. On heavy well water, white plaster is usually the wrong choice no matter the price.
Our pools never get a winter break. Water chemistry drifts faster in heat, and a surface that etches at low pH etches all year. Harder finishes tolerate more drift.
Salt chlorine generators are popular here and are fine on all three finishes if the chemistry is kept balanced, but they are less forgiving on plaster. Near the Gulf and on canals, pebble and quartz outlast plaster by years.
Coarse pebble can be. Polished mini-pebble and quartz feel close to plaster. Bring a sample home and stand on it barefoot before you decide. We carry samples.
A little, and it hides stains and debris better. It also shows scale and calcium lines more. Mid-tone blues and grays are the safest all-around choice in our area.
Yes, if the old plaster is sound. If it is hollow or delaminating we chip it out first. We check every pool with a hammer before quoting.
